VR Virtual Production 101 (Basics)

Virtual Production in Unreal Engine

In film and TV, live action and animation production is often a resource-heavy enterprise involving large sets, scores of crews and a big budget to create. But in recent years there’s been an emerging trend for streamlining production in a novel way that involves a “virtual set.” This virtual set is complete with foregrounds, backgrounds, and other live/CG generated environs and visual effects that exist in a purely digital format that will be for use immediately or can be added to a scene sometime later.

This class explores the use of game engines such as Unreal Engine and/or Unity to gather these production assets, where filmmakers are able to create scenes across both an actual and digital production environment.

Explored will be new uses and techniques of VP for camera, set design, prop design, motion capture and more, including the use of LED walls and simulated environs for scenic design for lighting, color control and the use of highly realistic digital mattes in the brave, new world of virtual production!

Prerequisite: Working knowledge of the computer.
