Toy Design

Please note: This class will be held at the facility of our partner Blueist Training. All grants (ETP, WIOA & Studio Arts Scholarship) are also available for all classes offered here!

The address for Blueist Training is 1426 Flower Street, Glendale, CA 91210 and their phone number is 818.649.1817. (For directions to get there, you can also manually enter the address in your map application) You can also go to the Blueist website contact page for any additional details.

The class will cover concept development and illustration for sculptural products using Photoshop to create orthographics and specs for manufacturing. Ideally, each student will come up with a concept for sculptural design for manufacturing, and have a submission ready blueprint ready to submit to factory for production. Most of the time will be spent in Photoshop.

Students will see how to develop successful product lines for specific target groups. They will then take their ideas and create descriptive illustration of their decorative toy design. More in-depth discussion will touch on popular culture, product development aimed for mass production, licensing, material options and limitations and much more. Time permitting, packaging options and design will also be touched upon.

The instructor will show how her sculptural products are made from start to finish with a step-by-step slide show: from drawing to sculpting to color call out, with detailed information for each step. While this will be mostly from a traditional approach, the increasing use of 3D sculpting and associated tools & workflow will also be discussed, with time set aside for an extensive Q&A session.
